Topic of the Week – BNPL Adoption Hits 50% in Europe, Reshaping Ecommerce in 2026

Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) is now firmly established as a mainstream payment method in Europe, with 50% of consumers using instalment or deferred payment options. According to a recent survey commissioned by Galaxus, this shift reflects how flexible payment solutions are increasingly shaping ecommerce behavior across the region. The study surveyed more than 2,600 consumers aged 15 to 79 across Germany, Austria, France, Italy, and Switzerland, offering a broad view of how payment preferences are evolving in 2026.

Adoption levels vary significantly between countries. France leads the way, with 55% of consumers using BNPL services, followed by Germany at 49%. Austria and Italy show moderate adoption at 43% and 41% respectively, while Switzerland trails behind with only 25% of consumers using these services. Frequency of use also differs: most Europeans use BNPL several times per year, but German consumers stand out for more regular usage, with 21% using it monthly and 8% even weekly. In contrast, Swiss consumers tend to use BNPL far less frequently, often once a year or less.

The main reason consumers choose BNPL is the ability to better manage their monthly budgets. Spreading payments over time reduces the burden of upfront costs and makes higher-value purchases more accessible. Convenience is another key factor, cited by about a quarter of users, while roughly one in six consumers say that paying in instalments makes products feel more affordable. This highlights not only the financial but also the psychological impact BNPL has on purchasing decisions.

In terms of product categories, BNPL is most commonly used for higher-ticket items, particularly electronics. Around half of BNPL users in countries like Germany and Italy finance electronics purchases this way, with France not far behind. Other categories also show notable trends: fashion sees relatively strong BNPL usage in Germany and Austria, while household appliances are frequently financed in France and Italy. Switzerland stands out again, as consumers there are more likely to use instalment payments for cars and motorbikes than for electronics.

Despite its growing popularity, BNPL also raises concerns around financial wellbeing. In Switzerland especially, 20% of consumers report that making instalment payments has a strong impact on their mental health. This suggests that while BNPL can improve affordability and access, it may also introduce financial stress for some users. The more cautious adoption seen in Switzerland could reflect greater awareness of these risks.

Overall, BNPL is becoming a critical component of the ecommerce landscape. For merchants, offering flexible payment options is increasingly important for driving conversions and increasing average order values, particularly in categories like electronics and appliances. However, differences between markets highlight the need for localised strategies, and the growing focus on consumer wellbeing suggests that transparent and responsible messaging will be essential as BNPL continues to expand across Europe.
