Air Freight FAQs

What is the difference between General Cargo and Special Cargo?

General Cargo: Non-hazardous goods, such as electronics, clothing, or textiles, that do not require special handling.

Special Cargo: Items requiring specific care, such as perishables (food, flowers), dangerous goods (chemicals, batteries), temperature-controlled products, or high-value items (vulnerable cargo).

What items are prohibited in air freight?

Commonly prohibited items include explosive, flammable, or toxic materials, such as gasoline, fireworks, lighter fuel, or certain hazardous chemicals.

What is "Chargeable Weight" and how is it calculated?

Chargeable weight is the higher value between the actual gross weight and the volumetric weight.

Volumetric Formula: \(\frac{\text{Length} \times \text{Width} \times \text{Height (cm)}}{6000} = \text{Kilograms} \times 1\).

What is an Airway Bill (AWB)?

An AWB is a non-negotiable transport document that serves as the receipt for goods, contract of carriage, and shipping instructions, crucial for tracking.

What are the common air freight service types

General/Standard: Normal lead times, cost-effective.

Express/Courier: Fastest, premium-priced, often door-to-door.

Deferred/Economy: Slower than standard, for non-urgent shipments.

What is the maximum size/weight allowed?

Limits are dictated by aircraft type (e.g., passenger vs. freighter).

Narrow-body: ~80-110 cm height, < 150 kg per piece.

Wide-body: ~160 cm height, ~500-1000 kg per piece.

Freighter: Up to 240-300 cm height and 5,000 kg+ per piece.

Do I need special documentation for dangerous goods?

Yes, a Shipper’s Declaration for Dangerous Goods (SDDG) is required, along with a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and specific IATA packing.

Can air freight be tracked?

Yes, all air freight is tracked via the AWB number, updated at each stage of the journey.

Is air freight cargo insured?

Carriers have limited liability, so separate cargo insurance is usually recommended and available to cover the full value of goods.

What are Incoterms in air freight?

Incoterms (e.g., EXW, FCA, DAP) determine which party is responsible for costs and risks at each stage, from pickup to delivery.

What are Primary Air Freight Screening Methods:

X-ray Screening: The most common method, using large, high-penetration machines to produce images of pallets or loose cargo for analysis by experts.

Dual-View/3D Imaging: Advanced X-ray technologies offer high-speed, 3D CT, or multi-view scanning to enhance detection accuracy and increase throughput.

Explosive Detection Dogs (EDD): Specially trained dogs used to detect explosives, particularly effective for unusually shaped or high-density cargo.

Secondary and Specialized Screening:

Explosive Trace Detection (ETD): A physical inspection where surfaces of items are swabbed and analyzed by machines to detect trace amounts of explosives.

Manual/Physical Search: If X-rays cannot clear cargo (e.g., if it is too dense), technicians will open and manually inspect the shipment.

Known Consignor Status: Cargo from shippers deemed "known" may undergo less intensive screening.

High-risk cargo often requires a combination of two methods (e.g., X-ray plus dogs) to comply with international regulations,
