Topic of the Week - Amazon Prime Day Sets New Record for Online Sales
Amazon's Prime Day event has set a new record for online sales in the US, generating a staggering $7.9 billion in revenue in the first 24 hours. This marks the largest day of ecommerce sales in 2025 so far, with a 9.9% year-over-year growth compared to the first day of the summer Prime event in 2024.
The record-breaking sales were driven by a combination of factors, including paid search, affiliates and partners, and social media networks. Paid search remained the top driver of retail sales, accounting for 28.1% of sales, while affiliates and partners contributed to 19.8% of sales. Social media networks drove 3.2% of sales, with a 10.3% growth rate.
Consumers also traded up to higher-ticket items, with the share of most expensive goods increasing by 20% across all categories. Notable categories with significant growth include electronics, appliances, sporting goods and furniture, toys, and personal care items.
The use of buy now, pay later (BNPL) options was also prevalent, with 6.4% of online orders using BNPL, driving $613.4 million in revenue. This represents a 13.6% year-over-year growth.
The most popular products during Prime Day included kids' apparel, home security products, refrigerators and freezers, computers, vacuum cleaners, headphones and speakers. These products saw significant growth, with kids' apparel up 305%, home security products up 260%, and refrigerators and freezers up 200%.
As the Prime Day event continues, Adobe Analytics forecasts that the entire four-day period will generate $23.8 billion in US online sales, equivalent to about the same sales total as two Black Fridays.
