What is a fuel surcharge?

On top of basic shipping charges, carriers such as DHL and UPS, levy an extra premium. This additional fee is intended to assist these carriers in covering the costs of fuel, particularly considering the continual fluctuation in fuel prices.

Fuel surcharge fees levied by each individual carrier are calculated by the US Energy Information Administration’s weekly National US Average on Highway Diesel Fuel Price report (EIA).

The US Gulf Coast (USGC) price for kerosene is used to compute the fuel surcharge rates internationally.

Most carriers use these rates in conjunction with a typical fuel surcharges calculator to calculate an additional charge that helps them safeguard their profits.

What causes fuel surcharge changes?

Fuel accounts for a significant portion of the cost of trucking products. Fuel surcharges are a mechanism for carriers to account for differences in fuel prices because fuel prices change virtually every hour and contracts are locked in months or years in advance.

How do they affect your shipping costs?

Any increased charges imposed by carriers will always be passed on to businesses which impacts their bottom lines.

The surcharge rates are calculated based on a certain percentage, which is determined mainly by the average monthly increase or decrease of fuel prices over the course of a given year. Since fuel prices usually increase in the spring and early summer, you can expect to see noticeable increases in shipping charges during these periods of the year.
